From Xi’an we took the high-speed rail to Lanzhou, intending to continue our journey to Dingxi the next day. In 2018, we subsidised farmers in Yangjiazhuang Village in Luotang Town of Longnan City to grow Chinese ground orchid (hyacinth orchid). Unfortunately, the floods in the summer damaged most of the plants. We did not give up and, with the help of the Gansu Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, we encouraged the farmers to continue growing. Through the unceasing efforts of the co-operative society, new seedlings have begun to thrive. We could not visit Longnan because of our tight schedule, but Mr Yang of the society made a special effort to come to see us by taking a train ride of several hours from Longnan. He presented a pennant to us as a token of thanks. In order to meet us, he had to stay in Lanzhou for the night. We were deeply touched by his sincerity!
