Aid on Farming - Giving out New Breed of Seeds
YEF bursaries at secondary schools are given out to children of peasant families. This year, we invited parents of the first year students at Dingxi No. 1 Secondary School to our gathering. Apart from stationery, we gave drought-resistant soybean seeds to the students and their parents. Two of our advisers, Professor Lam Hon-ming of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Professor Zhang Guohong of Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, had successfully bred these drought-resistant soybean seeds and obtained certification earlier this year so that they could be put on the market. We were able to obtain the original pure species at cost because of our close relation with them for giving away to the farmers’ children. We also invited the two professors to talk to the students and parents to let them know the features of the new species, how to improve soil quality and raise income by means of relay intercropping. In this way, farmers can share the fruits of scientific research.
