Scholarship schemes
Knowledge can change fate, hence we encourage children of peasant families to study. While the Central Government provides 9-year free education, schooling between form three and university have to be self-financed.
Since 2010, Yellow Earth Foundation (YEF) has been offering scholarships to children of peasant farmers who are admitted to high school to help them complete secondary education. A donation of $6,000 would suffice to sponsor a secondary student for three years. Sponsors will receive letters from their students every year. YEF will try to continue to keep in touch with students even after they have left school for further pursuits in higher education or work, and arrange to meet up with them where opportunities arise to keep abreast of their developments.

Bursaries for University Students
YEF has been offering financial aid to peasants’ children in senior secondary schools since 2010. When a sponsored student is admitted to university following the University Entrance Examination, we will give him a one-off subsidy to tide him over the financial difficulties in the early university days.
In 2016, we conducted a pilot project at Dingxi No. 1 Secondary School to offer bursaries for 3 students chosen from those whom we have been sponsoring through their secondary school. We helped meet the living expenses of these students for four years to assist them through their university education. In 2017, we sponsored 30 students from peasant families who had been admitted to Sichuan Agricultural University to study agriculture. We hope that through knowledge, they can improve the agricultural techniques and in turn, the livelihood of their hometown and other peasants. The students would receive the financial aid for four years and must remain diligent and well behaved throughout the term of their sponsorships.

In 2020, we selected from our sponsored students from particularly poor families who were admitted to the university that year and subsidized their four-year’s living expenses. In 2020, all the sponsored students of Sichuan Agricultural University graduated. We decided to make the project of subsidizing YEF high school students to go to university a regular project. In future, all of our high school students who gain entry to university will receive different levels of funding.
For only $20,000, a philanthropist can sponsor an undergraduate for four years. In addition to financial aid, YEF will organise activities for them. Students will write to their sponsors every year to report their development.

Agricultural Demonstration
Generally speaking, villages in hilly mountains at elevations between several hundred and several thousand metres, such as Dingxi in Gansu Province, are not favourable places to grow traditional crops. Hence it is necessary to explore other crops, and develop crops with high quality and yield such as anti-seasonal vegetables, high quality soybean, medicinal herbs, etc.
Our aim is to improve peasants’ livelihood by raising return from their land through scientific methods. In the past few years, we have worked with various organisations to subsidise agricultural projects, organise study visits for farmers, and give away seeds of new species to students and farmers. However the results were not very obvious because of the lack of scale. In 2017, we entered into a collaboration with Sichuan Agricultural University to develop technology transfer projects. The gaol is to bring technology to rural areas so that peasants could share the fruit of scientific research. The pilot project was a complete success. In addition to improving the livelihood of the assisted farmers, the entire village managed to get rid of poverty. This experience has proved that to be successful, projects must be followed up by a professional scientific research institution.

Setting up a Demonstration Plantation
In 2021, we reached an agreement with the Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University of Shaanxi to fund a toon planting project. Through the university’s scientific research team, a demonstration farm will be set up in Langgao County of Shaanxi to cultivate the “Qinbahong” toon, a species rich in selenium and with high yield. The project will demonstrate the method of cultivation of the newly bred “Qinbahong” toon, to provide the farmers with technical support and employment opportunities. Through the promotion of “Qinbahong” toon, we aim to industrialise the planting process so as to raise the income of local farmers.
The start-up budget of the project is 100,000 yuan, and we look froward to keen donations by philanthropists to achieve the goal of industrializing the project.
